💰The questions most asked: How have we done it? How can you afford to travel? Are you working whilst you travel? So we thought we would do a little post about it...
Firstly, I (Hayley) have always had a 𝘭𝘰𝘵 of debt. 5/6 years ago I still had around £45k to clear so first thing is first - 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐝𝐞𝐛𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞! Clearing debt is boring AF and took me about 4 years after deciding enough was enough but if you know the date you can finish paying it all and have a plan it makes it so much easier.
During that time we downsized our rentals, got rid of our cars, stopped buying new things and really reduced our outgoings as much as we could. I micro managed my finances and can share a 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐬𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐭 with anyone that would find it useful. Being debt free gives you a freedom I never knew!! 🙌🏻 If only I could have had a word with 17 year old me!
⏰Second point to note, we are 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐧 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝟑𝟎𝐬 and had carved out good careers for ourselves in technology. There is no way either of us could have saved as much in our 20s so when young people comment that they would love to do it - you have so much 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐚𝐯𝐞!!
💰Lastly - 𝐬𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠! Having never saved a penny in our lives, 3 years ago we began to seriously think about long term travel. I still had some significant debt left to pay but we also set up a savings account so we had something to work towards and any extra money we had, we saved. Early 2019 was when we got serious. Debt free by August, we started selling our stuff, downsized again and 𝐬𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐥𝐞𝐟𝐭. We booked our first flight a year in advance so we had a date and a goal which was so important!
So there you go, there was no lottery win, no quick and easy way. This has been 5 years in the making... decisions, choices, sacrifices and most of all time. Time flies so the day will be here before you know it and I promise if it’s your goal to travel or take some extended time away from work it is possible. It just takes time, commitment and planning.
